While many measures have been taken to tackle the issues, the current birthrate has not even recovered to the desired birthrate (1.8) that the working-age population wants to achieve, let alone the population reproduction standard. In contrast, fertility rates in some high-income countries, especially in Northern Europe, have been recovering in recent years. Why has Japan's fertility rate remained low? In this seminar, Professor James M. Raymo of Princeton University, who has done much international work on Japan's population issues, will be invited to explain these issues. In his lecture, he will explain the characteristics of Japan via international comparisons, based on the framework of second democratic transition (SDT) proposed in the field of demography. In particular, he will focus on the fact that Japan has not yet fully achieved gender equality in the labor market, which is a fundamental factor for its low fertility rate compared to countries with relatively recovering fertility rates, such as Scandinavian countries.
