Unlike many study abroad programs in Japan, Meiji Gakuin’s Global and International Studies is only a term-long, and it does not require prior knowledge in Japanese. This flexibility provides a unique study abroad opportunity to students whose busy schedules at their home institutions might preclude a longer program. The program begins in April (spring semester) and September (fall semester) each year. Approximately twenty-five students come each term. While at Meiji Gakuin, UC students are encouraged to take courses in the following three broad categories: economics; international relations and politics; and culture. (More information is available under the “About Us” menu of this site.) They can also enroll in Japanese language classes, or take courses on the Tokyo campus (depending on the year). You are required to take 12 units from the Global and International Studies courses (on the Yokohama campus). Once enrolled at Meiji Gakuin, UC students can join on-campus student clubs, and go on extra-curricular field trips sponsored by International Center (IC). In addition to the Global and International Program’s core classes, UC students also participate in several academic activities exclusive to the UC-Meiji Gakuin program. Please see the “Special Courses” page for more information. The trip comes early in the term, so it also gives students a chance to settle as a group. The itinerary details may vary from term to term, but the main activities include visits to: the Hiroshima Peace Memorial and Museum; Kure; and the Itsukushima Shrine on Miyajima Island. Other possible activities include meetings with survivors of the Hiroshima bombing. Here are some reports of the field trips. Meiji Gakuin supports UC students by providing convenient and affordable dormitory accommodations. The dormitory, Meiji Gakuin International Student House (MISH) is about thirty-five minutes on foot from the Totsuka Campus, and only five minutes from JR Totsuka Station and nearby shopping malls. This location offers easy bus access to the campus, and there are many trains going to Tokyo and Kamakura from the station. The rooms are furnished, and each one has a mini-kitchen, air-conditioner and fridge. The rent includes water, electricity, internet access, and breakfast & dinner (except on Sunday and national holidays). Electrical appliances maintained by MISH, such as Microwave oven, Toaster, Vacuum cleaner, Iron, Washing machine and Clothes dryer are available to all residents. *The housing payment is made via wire transfer about one month before the program begins. *Room rent: 240,000yen (one semester) Others Meiji Gakuin University’s International Center offers programs and activities for study abroad students on campus.
