This presentation will share a new program, supported by Keidanren and CBCC, to leverage these strong relationships through public private partnerships. Hawaii and Japan share many challenges of island economies, and have a commitment to sustainable solutions that mitigate and adapt to climate change. Shared experiences will lead to advancements in decarbonizing energy, responding to natural disasters, managing tourism for sustainability, and promoting regional economic cooperation in Northeast Asia. Hawaii offers a model platform to test new ideas and share experiences, and dialogs for multinational cooperation. Information Time and Date: 12:15-13:15, Monday, October 31, 2022 Venue: Online Language: English Admission: Free Hosts: Research Institute of Economy, Trade and Industry (RIETI) Speakers Speaker: Denise Eby KONAN (Dean, College of Social Sciences University of Hawaii at Mānoa) Dr. Denise Eby Konan is Dean of the College of Social Sciences and Professor of Economics at the University of Hawaii at Mānoa (UH Mānoa). As Dean, she provides leadership to twelve academic departments that deliver nearly a fifth of the degrees offered on campus. A destination of choice for students who want to affect change, break down barriers, touch lives and study in a multi-cultural and global environment, the College provides a culturally diverse experience that transforms students into bold, engaged global citizens, who operate and succeed in a multi-cultural context. A noted international trade economist, Konan has worked extensively in Asia, the Middle East and North Africa. She is an Economic Advisor to the President of Palau as part of the COFA. She has been a consultant to the World Bank, the Council of Foreign Relations, the Arab League, and governments of Egypt, Tunisia, Saudi Arabia, UAE, and Hawaii and publishes on issues of regional economic integration, trade in services, intellectual property rights, foreign direct investment and energy. Dr. Konan is President of the Hawaii, Asia Pacific Institute, Secretariat for the Northeast Asia Economic Forum. She is a Research Fellow at the University of Hawaii Economic Research Organization (UHERO) and founding Director of the Center for Sustainable Coastal Tourism at the University of Hawaii Sea Grant College Program. An award-winning teacher, Dean Konan is a Leadership Fellow with Science Education for New Civic Engagement and Responsibility (SENCER) under which Hawaii was recognized as a SENCER Model State in 2015. Dr. Konan served for two years as the Interim Chancellor and for three years as the Assistant Vice Chancellor of UHM.
