Electronic goods are assembled in China and parts and components such as semiconductor chips and image sensors are produced in Japan, Korea, and Taiwan. How did Asia become the center of electronics manufacturing? How did Asian workers learn to produce cutting-edge products? Are there lessons for countries like the United States that seek to reshore semiconductor manufacturing? This presentation addresses these issues based on Dr. Thorbecke's recent book "The East Asian Electronics Sector" published by Cambridge University Press in April 2023. Prior to this he was a Senior Research Fellow at the Asian Development Bank Institute and a professor at George Mason University. He has written papers investigating the determinants of trade flows in Asia and the rest of the world, the impact of shocks on global value chains and the spillovers that result from trade.
